GTO Report
The Pontiac GTO 1964-1974 and 2004-On
In 1964 Pontiac started the muscle car era with the GTO. It had hood scoops (that didn't actually work), duel exhaust, and two vertical headlights on each side. It was an engine from a full-sized car in the mid-sized Tempest. They advertised it as The Great One. In the, "The Great One" commercials they had a tiger coming out of the hood.
Little had changed for the '65 GTO except for the grill and the engine-to-car size penalty that GM had put on it.
In '66 they decided to put working hood scoops on it. Also, in '66 people started call it the "Goat."
My personal favorite, the '68, had a few changes from the previous years. They changed the headlights to side-by-side headlights with the optional retractable headlights.
They changed the GTO to the GTO Judge from '69 to '71. In '69 it still had the retractable headlights, but the paint had changed to carousel red with the 'Judge' pinstripe down the side. Originally the Judge was suppose to be for only one year, but Pontiac decided to continue it for two more years.
1974 was the last year for the GTO until Pontiac decided to bring it back in 2004. Thank you GM! Most of the GTO fans of the 60's and 70's GTO's didn't like it because it didn't have the hood scoops and duel exhaust. Pontiac had a problem with bringing the GTO back. They didn't have anything to work with so they went to Australia and patterned the GTO after the Australian Holden Monaro.
In '05, by popular demand, they added the hood scoops and duel exhaust. In the new ad campaign, Pontiac has the new GTO head to head with a BMW. It says how do you get a BMW owners attention? Beat them!
